Dear Sir:

A letter (enclosed) from Mr.

T.

Martin, NRC Region I, to a member of the NBS staff raises a question as to whether NBS is permitted to intermingle (mix) nuclides that are authorized under license SNM-362.

Item 3 of that letter points out that two materials which were separately authorized were not authorized when present as a mixture.

Hence our general question is: Can items from various lines of Table I.1-2 of our application, or equivalently items from paragraph 6,7,8 of the license, be mixed in a manner that they are a single physical entity? This question is pertinent only to those items permitted in

'any form'.

If the response to the above is negative then we request that license SNM-362 be amended by adding the following sentence to the end of paragraph 1.7, pg I-1-5, of our application:

" Materials authorized under this license for use in 'Any Form' may be mixed as long as each individual nuclide in the mixture does not exceed 10% of the license limit for that nuclide."

This provision is needed because multipla

nuclides, sometimes including source and special nuclear material nuclides, need to be used as a mixture as tracers in chemistry operations or as mixtures in Standard Reference Materials.

For further information you may contact. Thomas Hobbs or Lester Slaback at (301) 921-2247.

Sincerely, t'

g Lyma Pevey, Chief Occupational Health and Safety Division (Materials License Manager) f 8704070133 870320 PDR ADOCK 07000398 C
