Standerfer, use of Ccagulants, dated January 5,1987 Reference (a) submitted ycur evaluation of the criticality safety of two cheraical coagulants and a filter aid material on the defueling filter canis ters. The coagulants, designated as vendor product 1182 and vendor product 1192, are used in the defueling water cleanup system (DWCS) along with diatcmaceous earth as a filter aid. These materials are used to enhance the perforiaance of the DWCS filters in maint. lining water clerity, k'e previously approved the use of the coagulants and filter aid in DWCS but specified that filters containing the materials could not be dewatered until completion of a criticality analysis. Our approvals are ccntained in references (b) and (c).

We have completed our review of your analysis in reference (a) and have performed independent calculations that confirm your conclusions that the two chemical coagulants and diatomaceous earth have no adverse effects on criticality safety.
