SUBJECT:
CONTINUED OPERATION OF THE FORT ST. VRAIN NUCLEAR GENERATING STATION The attached memorandum and supporting material are provided for your information. The staff has reexamined the NRC's basis for licensing the Fort St. Vrain gas-cooled reactor in view of-the Soviet RBMK-1000 reactor accident at Chernobyl. Based upon all the information available to us at this time, and our evaluation, the staff concludes that continued operation of Fort St. Vrain is justified until its scheduled shutdown on May 31, 1986. We will re-examine this issue prior to permitting restart, expected around September, 1986. Unless the Commission objects, I propose to make public these conclusions by May 21, 1986.
