Dear Mr. Carey:

Subject:

Beaver Valley Unit 1 - Extension of Inservice Testing Interval (TAC 60624)

By letter dated February 3,1986, you informed the NRC of your intent to extend the first ten-year inservice testing (IST) interval by eleven months and twenty-one days so that the interval ends on September 20,~ 1987. As stated in your letter, the request is based on an edition of Section XI of the ASME Code, which allows extension of the interval if a plant has' been out of service six menths or more. You further stated that since we have granted an extension of your inservice inspection (ISI) interval by the same amount of time (letter, NRC to Duquesne Light Company dated May 21,1984), the requested IST extension would align the two programs, would eliminate scheduling inconsistencies, and would reduce the administrative burden of implementing two separate. programs.

We have evaluated your request.

In our opinion, this represents only a nominal and insignificant change in the applicable Code provisions since Subsections IWP and IWV of Section XI of the ASME Code have not historically experienced extensive changes over such a short period of time, which in this case is about 12 months. Therefore, your requested extension is granted. This completes our work on this licensing action.

Sincerely,

/s/
