SUBJECT:

' DIESEL FIRE PUMP. FUEL LINE RUPTURE PROTECTION Re: Brunswick Steam Electric Plant, Units l'and 2 By letter dated June <23, 1977 you 'comitted to install an excess flow switch and automatic shut off valve ~in the fuel supply line for therdiesel fire pump to automatically isolate in the event of a fuel. line rupture. The purpose of this modification was for the protection of the adjacent electric fire pump.

lBy letter dated September 19, 1985, you advised the NRC staff that technical difficulties in calibration of the flow' switch precluded implementation of the June 23, 1977 comitment. Therefore, your September 19, 1985 letter requested relief from the initial comitment and provided supporting information to show that rupture of the fuel line would not adversely affect the fire protection for the facility.

-We have completed our. review of the information provided by your September.19, 1985 submittal; the' enclosed Safety Evaluation provides the results of our-review. We have determined that the previous commitment to provide automatic isolation of the= diesel' fuel line need not be implemented because of the alternative fire protection measures provided. The alternative measures, as

' described in the Safety Evaluation, provide an acceptable level of protection to the electric fuel pump in the event of a fuel line rupture.
