Dear Mr. Adkins:

The Chairman has sent the Report to Congress on the Gaseous Diffusion Plants, as required by the Atomic Energy Act. The Report discusses the status of health, safety, and environmental conditions at the plants located near Paducah, Kentucky, and Portsmouth, Ohio, for the period from October 1,1997, to September 30,1998.

The Federal Reports Elimination Act of 1998 amended section 1701(b)(1) of the Atomic Energy Act to require an NRC report to Congress no later than the date on which a certificate of compliance is issued. Future reports will be prepared in conjunction with recertification reviews.

A copy of the report is provided for your information.
