Dear Mr. Myers:

By letter dated December 22,1998, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) requested that FirstEnergy Nuclear Operating Company provide a written response to the issues raised in a petition filed by the Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS) under 10 CFR 2.206 on November 9, 1998. The letter requested that this information be provided within 30 days from the date of receipt. The response had been expected on or about January 31,1999. In recent  !

conversations with the Perry Nuclear Power Plant Project Manager, FirstEnergy requested an additional 2 to 3 weeks to corr.plete its response, citing the need for more time to address the specific issues raised in the UCS Petition. As a result, the NRC is granting FirstEnergy an additional 11 calender days to complete its written response, and is extending the due date to February 11,1999.  ;

It is important that the NRC receive your response in a timely manner in order to ensure that all l participants in the informal public hearing process are better prepared to focus on the fuel  ;
