Gentlemen:
This refers to the routine safety inspection conducted by Messrs. A. G. Januska
and C. F. Gill of this office during the period May 12-29, 1986, of activities
at Callaway Plant, Unit 1 authorized by NRC Operating License No. NPF-30 and to
the discussion of our findings with Mr. G. Randolph and others of your staff.
The enclosed copy of our inspection report identifies areas examined during
the inspection. Within these areas, the inspection consisted of a selective
examination of procedures and representative records, observations, and
interviews with personnel.
In addition, our Mobile Laboratory was at the
site during the inspection to perform independent measurements of radioactivity.
During this inspection, certain of your activities appeared to be in violation
of NRC requirements, as described in the enclosed Notice.
The inspection showed
that action had been taken to correct the identified violation and to prevent
recurrence.
Our understanding of your corrective actions are described in
Section 6 of the enclosed inspection report.
Consequently, no reply to the
violation is required and we have no further questions regarding this matter at
this time.
In accordance with 10 CFR 2.790 of the Commission's regulations, a copy of

Public Document Room.
