Chairman Jackson's Comments on SECY 97-188 I approve the staffs proposed revision to its approach to following up on formerty licensed sites identiflod for further investigation in Agreement States, Option 3.1 racking the resolution of these remaining cases through reports from the Agreement States to the NRC, as well as tracking the State's pending activities through the IMPEP process, will allow NRC to account for every case. Notwithstanding this, I agree with Commissioner McGaffigan's comment regarding ,
NRC working together with the Agreement States to identify a mutualy acceptable mechanism to provide Federal assistance to the Agreement States, such as a general fund appropriation .
outside of the NRC fea base, in dealing with these sites.
