SUBJECT:
V. C. Summer Nuclear Station Docket No. 50/395 Operating License No. NPF-12 Appendix R "M" Board Barrier
Dear Mr. Denton:
In a letter from Mr. O. W. Dixon, Jr. dated September 20, 1985, South Carolina Electric and Gas Company (SCE&G) supplied additional information to your staff on the Service Water Booster Pump "M" board fire barrier. As indicated in the Attachment to that letter, the implementation of the proposed modification, to add additional protective material around the barrier supports, was dependent upon successful completion of the structural evaluation to ensure the barrier could withstand a seismic event.
Subsequent to the initial design, information was supplied by Thermal Science, Inc. (TSI) identifying an increase in weight of the new protective material over that originally published by TSI. As a result of increased weight, a reevaluation was performed. The results of this evaluation indicated that the barrier supporting system must be upgraded to accommodate the additional weight of the protective enclosure. Due to this design change, the original estimated completion date of 2nd Quarter 1986 is being rescheduled to ist Quarter 1987.
The design effort for this modification is near completion and the fire barrier material is on site; however, the design changes, and the complexity of installing the modification has caused us to extend our completion date for the modification. The delay in implementation of this modification has a negligible impact on risk to the public since the compensating action, a roving fire watch, will remain in place until the modification is complete.
An updated Schedule of Modification Implementation is attached. By copy of this letter, the schedule has been forwarded to the Region II principal fire inspector as a status report on our Appendix R reanalysis / modifications.
