Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation Frank J. Miraglia, Director g

Division of PWR Licensing-B C

FROM:

William D. Travers, Director Tl11-2 Cleanup Project Directorate

SUBJECT:

URC THI-2 CLEANUP PROJECT DIRECTORATE WEEKLY STATUS REPORT FOR OCTOBER 20 - 26, 1986 1.

DEFUELING The core drilling rig successfully drilled a test pattern of 19 holes through the crust at the top of the remaining core material.

The loose material from the drilling operation was readily removed from the test area using existing tooling (i.e., heavy duty spade bucket). A drilling test on intact fuel area has been started (3 of the 19 holes) pins in the test pattern Production drilling near the core center line has also begun.

Startup and test operations continue on the Defueling Water Cleanup System (DNCS) ion exchange system. Use of the ion exchangers in conjunction with the DWCS filters will aid in maintaining reactor coolant system water clarity and will reduce the activity levels of u.

the coolant.

2.

ENVIRONMENTAL !!0NITORING US Environa2ntal Protection Agency (EPA) sample analysis results show that THI site liquid effluents are in accordance with regulatory limits. HRC requirements, and The City of Lancaster Agreement.

The Lancaster water senple taken at the water works river intake and

's analyzed by EPA consisted of a seven day composite sample taken 7

October 5 - 11, 1986. A gacna scan detected no reactor related f.-

activity.

THI water samples taken by EPA at the plant discharge (includes Units 1 and 2) to the river consisted of seven daily conposite sampics taken from October 4 - 11, 1986. A garna scan detected no reactor related activity.
