SUMMARY

OF JUNE 25,1998, MEETING WITH BALTIMORE GAS AND ELECTRIC COMPANY (BGE) REGARDING LICENSE RENEWAL ACTIVITIES FOR CALVERT CLIFFS NUCLEAR POWER PLANT, UNIT NOS,1 AND 2 (TAC NO MA2156) On June 25,1998, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) staff held a public meeting with representatives of Baltimore Gas and Electric Company (BGE) at Rockville, Maryland, to discuss BGE's age-related degradation and inspection (ARDI) program for License Renewal. A list of meeting attendees is provided in Enclosure 1 and slides used by BGE for the discussion are provided in Enclosure 2. Mr. Barth Doroshuk, Project Manager for BGE's license renewal application, opened BGE's presentation summarizing that approximately 395 programs existed onsite and that only 10 new aging management programs were needed as a result of BGE's preparations for license renewal. During the meeting BGE provided an overview ofits ARDI program which was one of the 10 new aging management programs. BGE also used several examples of components from the compressed air system and feedwater system to illustrate implementation of its ARDI

. program. Additionally, BGE concluded its presentation with an overview of how the ARDI program elements compared to the NRC's Draft Standard Review Plan for License Renewal program elements related to aging management programs.

Life Cycle Management Project , i Draft SRP Requirement - 3 Example of parameters and components monitored by the ARDI Program for the~ FW system (BGE LRA Section 5.9 page 1 5.9-10 Group 1 Aging Management Programs - Discovery; and page 5.9-11 Group 1 Demonstration of Aging Management):

                       - Crevice corrosion, general corrosion, and pitting of FW

[ components can be readily detected through non-destructive examinati~on techniques.

                      - As such, an inspection program to identify occurrence of corrosion is an effective means of determining if corrective actions are. required for managing these aging mechanisms.
                      - All components (FW piping, check valves, hand valves, MOVs, temperature elements) will be included a new plant program (e.g., ARDI) to accomplish the needed inspections for general corrosion, crevice corrosion and pitting.
