ZION NUCLEAR POWER STATION, UNITS 1 AND 2 - FIRE PROTECTION APPENDIX R TO 10 CFR PART 50 (TAC N0s. 55582 AND 55583)

By letter dated July 27, 1984, Comonwealth Edison Company (CECO) submitted reassessment of the safe shutdown capability and revised _ proposed modifications to meet the requirements of Appendix R to 10 CFR Part 50, including Section III.G.3 and III.L. By the same letter of July 27, 1984, Ceco requested several exemptions from Section III.G.2 and III.G.3 of Appendix R. The July 27, 1984 submittal has been supplemented by letters datad August 31, 1984, January 24, 1985, February 18, 1986, February 9,1987, January 21 and February 23, 1988.

i The staff has reviewed all of the above suomittals and granted six exemptions.

The staff has also concluded that one of the exemptions requested was not j necessary. The details of the staff's review are contained in the Safety Evaluation attached to the exemption.

The approval of the interim measures safe shutdown capability, and modifications to meet Appendix R are the subject of other licensing action.
