' Washington, DC 20555 Joseph M. Farley Nuclear Plant Revision to Response to Generic Letter 97-04," Assurance of Sufficient Net Positive

' Euction Head For Emergency Core Cooling And Containment Heat Removal Pumos" Ladies and Gentlemen:

. NRC Generic Letter 97-04 requested addressees to provide information pertaining to the i

L L

ECCS and containment spray pump NPSH calculations for the recirculation mode. The 90-

. day actions were completed by Southern Nuclear Operating Company (SNC), and the requested information was transmitted by SNC letter dated December 30,1997,

- As a result of this information request, SNC identified needed changes and enhancements to i

the' existing calculations. By letter dated June 1,1998, SNC revised the December 30,1997,-

SNC response to Generic Letter 97-04 to denote the changes to the existing calculations.

Subsequent to the June 1,'1998 submittal, SNC was informed of an error by the vendor in

. performance test data for the spare charging pump. This error has resulted in a change to the required NPSH for the charging pump as documented in the June 1,1998 submittal. The performance testing of the' spare charging pump with the corrected data establishes a required NPSH'of 94 feet at 712 gpm versus the required NPSH of 50 feet at 710 gpm previously

reported. Adequate margin still exists for the charging pumps as the available NPSH was L

j determined to be 166 feet at a flow of 708 gpm.

t Respectfully submitted,
