L The NRC issued Generic Letter (GL) 97-01, Degradation of Control Rod Drive Mechanism Nozzle and other Vessel Closure 11ead Penetrations, dated April 1,1997. By letters dated April 29,1997, and July 25,1997, Southern Nuclear Opersting Company (SNC) provided the Farley Nuclear Plant (FNP) 30-day and 120-day responses, re::pectively, to GL97-01.
As stated in the 120-day response to GL97-01, SNC is pursuing a solution to the VEi> !ssue in conjunction with the Nuclear Energy Institute (NEI), the PWR owners groups, an:'. the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) who are compiling information on the estimated operating time from January 1,1997, needed to initiate and propagate a crack 75% through wall in a vessel penetration for all operating PWRs in the United States. Although originally scheduled to be completed by the end of 1997, NEI has advised that the detailed inspecdon plans for the industry will not be completed as originally scheduled. A revised schedule will be pmvided by NEI.
SNC has tentatively scheduled a volumetric examination of the FNP Unit ? - essel head penetrations during the Fall 2002 outage. SNC will evaluate the results of the NEI/WOG integrated impection program and will adjust the inspection schedule for FNP Unit 2 accordingly.
