WITHDRAWAL 0F IEEE 279-1971 1
This memorandum is directed principally to staff members of IEEE standards writing committees, for information.
During the recent meeting of the IEEE Nuclear Power Engineering Committee (NPEC) (June 20-21 1984), of which I as the NRC member, the Committee vis informedthatthelEEEStandardsBoardhadapprovedthewithdrawalof IEEE 279-1971.
This action was anticipated by the Committee since we had voted during the previous meeting to withdraw the standard.
I voted in favor of with-drawal.
i As you can see from the enclosed copy of my letter to Mr. J. E. Thomas, ChairmanofthecognizantNPECsubcommittee(Subcommittee 6) Ions)edJune8, dat 1983, withdrawal does not remove IEEE 279 (1968 or 1971 vers from the regulations. Mr. Eric Jakel's (ELD) quoted legal opinion gives the basis for this determination.
IEEE is following its normal procedure of ceasing femal publication of l
standards that have been suwrseded.
For exam)1e, IEEE 279-1968 was with-drawn upon publication of I EEE 279-1971.
In tw present case versions of IEEE 603 have,ill continue to be available in the 1971.
IEEE 279 (both versioM ) w volumes that are periodically updated by IEEE.
(IEEE 603 will be treated separately in the regulatory guide development process).
