Dear Sir:

. HOPE CP.EEK GENERATING STATION DOCKET NO. 50-354 UNIT NO. 1 ,

l SPECIAL REPORT 88-005-01 On July 14, 1988, the Core Spray system seismic monitor

(SG-VE-7863) was declared inoperable after failing a l semi-annual channel functional test. Techr.ical Specification 3.3.7.2 requires that any inoperable seismic monitoring channels be returned to an operable status within 30 days, and if not, submit a special report within the following 10 days
detailing the circumstances surrounding the inoperability. As of August 13, the channel was still inoperable.

Troubleshooting by the station maintenance department determined that the monitor longitudinal accelorometer is sticking and the transverse accelorometer is stuck in its naturai frequency. Due to the location of the inoperable monitor 'inside the dr/well, mounted on "A" Core Spray line),

replacec<,at of the monitor is not possible during power operation. A replacement conitor is on hand and was scheduled

, to be installed during the next plant outage (forced or scheduled) requiring access to the drywell. During the forced outage of August 26, 1988, scheduling difficulties precluded  ;

the installation. The inoperable monitor is now scheduled for l replacement during the next plant outage (forced or scheduled) r requiring access to the drywell.
