Subject: Combined Inspection Report Nos. 50-317/86-01 and 50-318/86-01
This refers to the routine safety inspection conducted by Mr. A. A. Varela of
this office on January 13-17, 1986, at Bechtel Engineering Office, Gaithersburg,
Maryland and at the Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant, Lusby, Maryland, of
activities authorized by NRC License Nos. DPR-53 and DPR-69 and to the discus-
sions of our findings held by Mr. Varela with Mr. J. Lippold of your staff at
the conclusion of the inspection.
Areas examined during this inspection are described in the NRC Region I
Inspection Report which is enclosed with this letter. Within these areas, the
inspection consisted of selective examinations of procedures and representative
records, interviews with personnel, and observations by the inspector.
Within the scope of this inspection, no violations were observed.
During this inspection, however, concerns were identified regarding the
as-built conditions of two masonry walls in the Unit 1 Auxiliary Building. To
address these concerns, your engineering organization committed to implement a
program involving analysis and repair of these walls and to report the,results
of this program to us by April 1, 1986.
In a telephone conversation on
February 12, 1986 between Mr. L. . Russell of your staff and Messrs. J. W'ggins
and T. Elsasser of NRC Region I, these commitments were confirmed.
No reply to this letter is required. Your cooperation with us in this matter
is appreciated.
