EMERGENCY DIESEL GENERATORS

~~

Dear Mr. Denton:

At a recent meeting of the Transamerica DeLaval Incorporated (TDI) Owners' Group, Carolina Power & Light Company (CP&L) was requested, by Mr. C. Berlinger of your staff, to submit the results of a torsiograph test performed on the Shearon Harris l A diesel generator. A copy of the test report is enclosed in Attachment A and the conclusions of this test are as follows:

The first natural fregwency of the torsional system is approximately 28.8 Hz, and is in good agreement wiih Delaval Holzer calculations.

The stresses are below DEMA's allowables for both single order and combined responses at full load and 110% load, w

The engine was operating in an adequately balanced manner.

The results are consistent with those presented in the Phase I crankshaf t report and

' the DR/QR report for Shearon Harris.

In addition to the test report, CP&L would like to take this opportunity to provide your staff with an update on the current status of the Shearon Harris TDI program since our last submittal of May 13,1985. This update is provided as a brief report in Attachment B.

As recommended by NRC, the TDI Owners' Group has recently initiated a program to review the maintenance and surveillance recommendations contained within the DR/QR

(

report. Significant changes made to the SHNPP maintenance and surveillance program as a result of the OG's~ review will be documented as described in our letter of May 13, i
