' DESCRIPTION:
' The device. consists of a deplet'ed* uranium shield and a polyurethane filler enclosed in a'1/8" (3.18 mm) steel case consisting of a right circular cylinder and two cast 1/4" (6.35.mm) end pieces.
The assembly is secured by heliarc welding.
A'zircaloy "S"
tube' extends through the device's shielding mass.

At the bottom is a lock box through which the source pigtail
)
cable and male half of the quick disconnect-connect connector
-protrude.
The: lock box is designed such that the source pigtail cannot be pulled backwards to the lock box to expose the source when. connecting the drive cable: female half of the connector to the source pigtail.
A-plunger type lock secures the assembly against movement in the uranium shield "S"
tube.
The drive cable conduit (15'

At the top of the device, the source conduit is attached to a fitting at.the opposite end of the "S"
tube by a spring loaded quick disconnect-connect connector-arranged after removing a protective screw cap.

The' depleted uranium shield (approximately -37 pounds (17 kg]) is secured in the position by the two cast steel end pieces and is

cushioned on its circumference within the device by polyurethane.
A leather' carrying handle is attached to the upper steel end pieces.
A teleflex drive cable arrangement with a hand crank is provided for moving the source between the exposed and shielded positions from a. remote location.
.The outside dimensions of the device are 5-1/2" (13.97 cm) in diameter by 7-3/8" (18. 73 cm) - in height.

The device bears the manufacturer's label which specifies that the device contains 37 lb. (17 kg) of depleted uranium.
The label also specifies the isotope, activity, date of calibration, source serial number, and states " Danger, Do Not Handle, Radioactive Material.
Notify Gamma Industries, Baton Rouge, Louisiana, or Civil Authorities."
EXTERNAL RADIATION LEVELS:
The source within the device is less than 4 inches from the device outer surface.
Utilizing the maximum possession quantity of iridium for this' device (120 Ci (4.4. TBq)) and cobalt (110 mci (4.07 GBq)) the following dose rates were obtained with a calibrated ionization chamber.

The manufacturer furnishes an operating and maintenance manual which_ includes step-by-step instructions for using the exposure device and exchanging sources using the Gamma Industries Model C-4 source changer.
The operating instructions do not in themselves meet regulatory requirements concerning operating and emergency procedures for industrial radiography.

The Model Century S is device'is no longer manufactured or distributed by Gamma Industries, Inc. and Gamma Industries, Inc.
is no longer in business.
Therefore, the registration
. certificate is being converted to an inactive registration certificate.
The device was originally approved'for licensing purposes by the Louisiana Division of Radiation Control.
NRC attempted to obtain copies of all'information submitted by the registrant in support
'j of the' evaluation.
However,.NRC could not locate all the information.
Therefore, no safety evaluation of the device was performedias part of the conversion of the certificate to inactive-status.
