Subject: NRC Region I Inspection Report No. 50-293/88-25
This refers to the routine safety inspection (50-293/88-25) conducted by
Messrs. C. Warren, J. Lyash, T. Kim and others of this office on June 1,1988
to July 17, 1988, at the Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station, Plymouth, Massachusetts.
Areas excmined during this inspection are described in the NRC Region I
Inspection Report which is enclosed with this letter.
During this inspection, the inspectors observed implementation of your recently
revised maintenance control processes and found that it provides significantly
improved guidance and control of field activities.
During the past year Pilgrim has experienced a significant number of engineered
safety feature (ESF) actuations. While we recognize that you have taken steps
to assess the problem, recent continuation of this trend, as discussed in the
enclosed report, indicates the need to bring these efforts to fruition.
Please
submit in writing within 30 days of receipt of this letter your evaluation of
the signif ance, root cause and corrective actions taken in response to the
high number of ESF actuations.
