B. J. Youngblood, Project Director PWR Project Directorate No. 4 Re:
Catawba Nuclear Station Docket Nos. 50-413 and 50-414
Dear Sir:
On September 25, 1985, representative from the NRC Staff, Westinghouse Electric and Duke Power met at the Catawba site to review the implementation of inadequate core cooling instrumentation (ICCI) at Catawba.
The meeting was documented in a November 7, 1985 meeting summary by the Staff.
Comments on the meeting summary were submitted by my letter of January 8, 1986.
The purpose of this letter is to clarify certain aspects of the ICCI system.
The ICCI system is discussed in Section 1.9 of the Catawba FSAR in response to TMI Item II.F.2.
The system is described in terms of its three subsystems - Subcooling Margin Monitor (SMM), Core Exit Thermocouples (CET) and Reactor Vessel Level Indication System (RVLIS).
As shown on the attached fi gure, the ICCI System utilizes the Class IE Westinghouse microprocessor system, ICCM-86, to perform all three functions.
Inputs from the Reactor Coolant System are processed by the microprocessor system and displayed by the plant computer and the plasma display.
All three functions (SMM, CET and RVLIS) are displayed on both displays.
Also the plasma display trends SMM and RVLIS for the previous 30 minutes and trends the five highest CETs per train for the previous 40 minutes, p$b f/

The ICCI System for Catawba Unit I will be upgraded to the same configuration during the first refueling outage.
Very truly yours,
