PILGRIM NUCLEAR POWER STATION PREOPERATIONAL ENVIRONMENTAL RADIATION SURVEY PROGRAM QUARTERLY REPORT April 1, 1971 - June 30, 1971 BOSTON EDISON COMPANY BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS 1
l Person responsible for ICN/TRACERLAB analyses of sampics & review of data Person responsib1( for BECo program ICN/TRACERLAB Chemical & Radioisotope Division International Chemical and Nuclear Corp.
1601 Trapelo Road, Waltham, Massachusetts 02154 8804040188 710630 PDR ADOCK 05000293 R PM
DISCUSSION OF RESULTS Air Surveillance Air particulate activity continued to increase as anticipated from the normally observed annual cycle. The monthly average values are significantly higher than those observed in 1970 due to the injection of new nuclear debris into the atmosphere in October 1970. The agreement between on-site, off-site and reference stations continues satisf actory.
Gamma dose measurement using thermoluminescent dosimeters appears satisfactory on the basis of comparing of f-site and on-site monthly averages.
The month to month variability at each location is somewhat more than desired and is being investigated.
Acuatic Surveillance Domestic and recreation water samples yielded analytical results which are consistent with those seen previously. Gross beta values show an increase O
in surf ace water during June reflecting the increase in f allout. May Sr values also show an increase for the same reason. Well water values continue below the detection limit. Surface water sa=pling was changed in June so that the monthly sample consists of a composite of e;ekly samples rather than a single grab sample.
Seawater fractional gross beta and specific nuclide values are similar to data observed previously.
Marine life data are also comparable to values f rom earlier periods.
I Initial evaluation of gamma spectra indicate the presence of 141,144Ce, 95Zr and ,
1 03,106 Ru in rockweed and Irish moss samples.
Te rres trial Surveillance Milk sample values showed the same range and variability of values observed during previous periods. The sampling method was changed in June to
l l
l a composite sample as described above for surface water to make the sample more representative of the entire month period.
Values f rom crop samples were comparable between locations and were I Ce, 952r and 03,106 similar to values from previous periods. '
Ru we re de-tected in the initial pro;essing of the gamma spectral data.
SUMMARY
The pre-operational environmental radiation surveillance program appears to be providing the correlation of data between locations which will permit mean-ingful comparisons for the operational data. The general variability to be expect-ed is also being defined.
No changes in the program are recommended at this time.
