By letter dated April ll,1968, Yankee Atcmic Electric Company requested -

approval of Proposed Change No. 83 to the Technical Specifications of Facility License No. DPR-3 for the Yankee Ntclear Power Station. %e proposed change would authorize installation of up to four experimental stationary stainless steel clad, miniature fission chambers in flux-wire paths that am presently inoperable in the reactor. The fission chambers, 0.072 to 0.090 inch in diameter and 2.25 inches long, will be located in a fixed position at approxinutely mid-com.

chamber will contain less than 2 mg of enriched umnitra. Each fission Since these experimental fission chambers will not mplace any existing in-com instrumentation, they will rot alter the reliability or the level of safety of the present instrumentation system.

The additional fissionable material that will be introduccJ into the reactor is less than 8 mg, too insignificant an anount to affect the' nuclear characteristics of the core.

Likewise, the anount of other naterials in the detectors are too snall to affect the characteristics of the core. Consequently, we have concitxied that the proposed change does not present significant hazards considerations not described or implicit in the hazards sumrrary report, and that there is .

reasonable assumnce that the health and safety of the public will not be

. endangered by operation of the facility with the proposed change.

In view of the foregoing and pursuant to Section 50.59, 10 CFR Part 50, Change 16. 83 is hereby authorized as proposed.

y Sincerely yours, Peter 'i M brris, Sector DRL E omcE >
