Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation Division of Project Management.

Light Water Reactors Branch No. 4 U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, D. C. 20555 Attention: Stephen A. Varga, Chief Gentlemen:

This letter is to inform you of the most recent status of our excavation and geomapping effort for the BFS Unit 1 foundation. Our periodic communication of this status to you will hopefully assure a timely site visit by your Geosciences Branch.

As of 12/21/78 we have brought the excavation down to a nominal El 542' to 543' (a foot or two above final excavation) where compaction tests and moisture tests can be performed on the load bearing surface of the foundation. These tests will be performed up to December 29, 1978 where the actual excavation surface will not be exposed.

Starting January 2, 1979 sectional exposure of the bearing surface will be cleared, cleaned, mapped and sealed to prevent deterioration of the surface within a maximum of 24 hours2.777778e-4 days
0.00667 hours
3.968254e-5 weeks
9.132e-6 months
.

As per our earlier discussion I will contact you on 12/27 or 12/28 to provide you with another status.

Very truly yours

~ .
