'Ibe direct radiation survey was conducted using Ilxiium Model 19 Micro R meters.

Backgrourd was measured as 0.6 uR/hr. A 'IWinelec Motel 5100 Proportional counter was used to analyze the smear mmples. 'Ihe systs background was 0.1 cpn for alpha and 0.95 cpn for beta /gama.

Instrument efficiency was 32% for alpha and 47% for beta /gama. Countirg time on the Tennelec system was 10 minutes.

SUBJ: INSPECTION OF CONTROLLED SPACES ON SAVANNAH >j l

1 On 10 February 1987 Inspected Savannah Reactur l l

Space, Port & Starboard Stabilizer Rooms, and j the Hot and Cold Chen41 cal Labs for Material l Condition. I was accompanied by Mr. Gibb Vinson of the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control. The Two Pump Rooms were not inspected.

2. Material Condition was satisfactory in all areas except the Reactor Space where the following dis-crepeneies were noted:
a. Of the 2 exhaust fans (2-100-1 & 2-100-2), one supply fan (1-105-1) and two recirculating fans )1 (3-107-1 & 3-107-2), only recirculating fan  ;

(3-107-2) was operational. I

b. The deck in the After Port portion was heavily rusted. This deterioration is apparently caused by condensation collecting on and running down i the After Bulkhead. Smear samples and a Geiger Hueller survey revealed no detectable readings above background and no removable surface contamination.

3 .The deteriorating Deck should be~ scaled, treated with rust transformer, primed end painted. In order to cor-

, rect the moisture problem, desicant should be placed in the Reactor Space, and as a minimum, both recircu-lating fans should be made operational and run contin-uously.

4. Recommend these points be discussed at the next scheduled Savannah Safety Committee Meeting and an acceptable pro-cedure concerning entry and disposal of rust chips be developed.
