MAIN STEAM LINE BREAK (MSLB) OUTSIDE CONTAINMENT WITH SUPERHEATED STEAM RELEASE (TAC NO. 61224)

By letter dated April 4,1986, Wolf Creek Nuclear Operating Corporation (WCN00, previously Kansas Gas and Electric Company) submitted an analyses entitled "Evaluatinn of Environmental Qualification of Equipment Considering Superheat Effects of High Energy Line Breaks for Callaway Plant and Wolf Creek Generating Station." This report responded to the-NRC staff's concerns described in IE Notice 84-90. Additional information was requested by the' staff and was provided by WCNOC in letters dated April 1,1987, October 2,1987 and February 12, 1988.

The NRC staff, with technic'al assistance from Battelle Pacific Northwest Laboratory, has completed its review of your submittals. Based upon the i

staff's review we conclude that you have demonstrated that proper environtrental qualification of safety-related equipment outside of containment has been demonstrated. The staff's related Safety Evaluation is enclosed.
