Dear Mr. Tiernan:

The NRC has provided relief from a requirement of the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code,Section XI which BG&E has determined to be impractical in accordance with your applicatlon dated September 13, 1985 as supplemented by your letter dated January 13, 1986.

The code relief, granted in accordance with 10 CFR Part 50, Section 50.55a(g)(6)(1), relates to the requirement for observation of lubricant level or pressure when performing periodic pump testing for component cooling ~ water pumps. The pumps in the Component Cooling System have grease lubricated bearings. The bearings are greased in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions on a regular preventative maintenance schedule as described in the enclosed Safety Evaluation.

We have determined that the requirement for which relief has been requested and approved is impractical at this time and pursuant to 10 CFR 50.55a(g)(6)(i),

that the granting of this relief is authorized by law and will not endanger life or property or the common defense and security and is otherwise in the public interest. In making this determination we have given due consideration to the burden that could result If this requirement was imposed on your facility.

Sincerely,.

M/ .
