Dear Mr. Carey:

Subject:

Beaver Valley Unit 1, Request for Additional Information Regarding Neutron Fluence Estimates (TAC No. 59941)

By letter dated January 21, 1986, you submitted infonnation related to the fracture toughness regt.irements for protection against pressurized thermal shock events, as required by 10 CFR 50.61. We have reviewed your submittal and found that no justification was included for the fast neutron fluence which was used in the derivation of the RT PTS. The enclosure describes the specifics of our information needs.

Please provide the requested information within 45 days of your receipt of this letter. If additional time is needed for your response or if you need clarification (,f these questions, feel free to contact me.

BEAVER VALLEY UNIT 1, REQUEST FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION REGARDING NEUTRON FLUENCE ESTIMATES TO THE PRESSURE VESSEL FOR 10 CFR 50.61 In tables I and II of the PTS submittal present and end-of-life peak fluence is given.

1. List the assumptions in the computer codes and the data used in the derivation of these values. -
2. Give the azimuthal distribution of the (Er,1.0MeV) neutron fluence to the inner surface of the pressure vessel, present and at the end of life.
3. Have core power distributions from the previous cycles been used in the evaluation of the present fluence?
4. Was a benchmarked code used for the estimation of the fluence?
5. Have the fluence values been compared to the results of surveillance capsules?
6. List the assomptions for future cycle power distributions.
