Generic Letter 95-07, " Pressure Locking and l
l Thermal Binding of Safety-Related Power-Operated l
Gate Valves,"
]
On August 17, 1995, the NRC issued Generic Letter 95-07, I
" Pressure Locking and Thermal Binding of Safety-Related Power-Operated Gate Valves" to request that licensees take actions to ensure that safety-related power-operated gate valves that are susceptible to pressure locking or thermal j
binding are capable of performing their safety functions.
l' Duke Power responded to Generic Letter 95-07 by a letter from M.S. Tuckman dated February 13, 1996.
Additional information was provided on July 31, 1996 and an amended response was submitted on February 3, 1997. Please find attached an update of corrective actions completed during the recent Unit 1 outage. Tb.
corrective actions were commitments from the Febe j 3., 1997 McGuire response, Questions should be directed to Kay Crane, McGuire Regulatory Compliance at (704) 875-4306.

l ne following is the status of corrective actions for valves implemented during the McGuire Nuclear Station l
IEOClI refueling outage in regard to NRC Generic Letter 95-07," Pressure Locking And Hermal Binding j
Of Safety-Related Power-Operated Gate Valves."
i IFW0027A i
Valve Anolication: Refueling water storage tank supply isolation I
k Completed Corrective Action: This valve was modified during IEOClI refueling outage by addition of a j
bonnet bypass line to preclude any potential pressure locking effects.
l IND0058A and IN10136B l
Valve Annlication: Low head injection pump discharge to high and medium head injection pump i
isolations.
j Completed Corrective Action: These valves were modified during 1EOClI refueling outage by addition of bonnet bypass lines to preclude any potential pressure locking effects.
l t
IN10121A and IN101528 Valve Anotication: Medium head injection pumps to hot leg isolations j
Completed Corrective Action: These valves were modified during IEOClI refueling outage by addition of bonnet vent holes to preclude any potential pressure locking effects.

?
Valve Annlication: Low head injection pump to hol leg isolation T
Comnleted Corrective Action: This valve was modified during IEOClI refueling outage by addition of a bonnet bypass line to preclude any potential pressure locking effects.
l INS 0001B and INS 0018A i
Valve Annlication: Containment spray pump suction containment recirculation sump.isolations Completed Corrective Actions: These valves were modified during IEOClI refueling outage by addition j
of bonnet bypass lines to preclude any potential pressure locking effects.
i 1/2NS00128,1/2NS00158,1/2NS0029A and 1/2NS0032A Valve Annlication: Containment spray header isolations Completed Corrective Actions: The controlling procedures for NS pump operation were revised to include stroking open these valves after completion of applicable trains pump run. This eliminated the mechanism i
for inducing any potential pressure locking effects as described in the response to GL 93-07.
