NARRATIVE

SUMMARY

l MONTH: May,1997 Catawba Unit 2 began the month of May in end-of-cycle 08 refueling outage. The unit refueling outage spanned 42.38 and was scheduled for 45 days. On 05/02/97 at 1852 the unit was placed on-line. 'Ihe unit increased power and held at 16.5% power from 2020 to 2330 due to turbine soak. On 05/02/97 at 2330 the j.

unit decreased power and held at 9.5% power from 05/03/91 at 0055 until 05/03/97 at 0116 when the main turbine overspeed trip test was performed. The unit was placed on-line 05/03/97 at 0324. During power escalation, the unit held at 30% power and 75% power from 05/03/97 at 1250 to 05/05/97 at 0405 and from 05/06/97 at 0355 to 05/06/97 at 0740 to perfonn power ascension testing. On 05/09/97 at 0912 the unit began decreasing power and held at 67% power from 1051 to 1420 due to main turbine control cil leak.

The unit returned to 100% full power on 05/10/97 at 0300 and operated at or near 100% full power the remainder of the month.
