Office of Putdic Affairs W35-n, D.C. 20555 No.84-106 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Tel. 301/492-7715 (Frfday, August 31,1984)

NRC AUTHORIZES FULL POWER OPERATION OF GRAND GULF NUCLEAR PLANT IN MISSISSIPPI The Nuclear Regulatory Commission Office of Nuclear Reaccor Regulation on August 31 amended the operating license held by Mississippi Power &

Light Company and other owners to authorize full pcwer operation of Unit 1 of the Grand Gulf Nuclear Station located in Claibornt! County, Mississippi. The other owners are Middle South Energy, Inc. and South Mississippi Electric Power Association.

Grand Gulf Unit 1 uses a boiling water reactor and at full power will have a net electrical output of about 1250 megawatts. The plant is located on the east bank of the Mississippi River, about six miles northwest of Port Gibson and 25 miles south of Vicksburg.

On June 16, 1982, the NRC Staff issued a license which permitted fuel loading and low power testing up to five percent of full power. Since that time the licensee has been addressing a number of issues preparatory to obtaining a full power license.

Included were modifications to the plant because of design deficiencies identified during testing; extensive review and corrective action relating to the technical specifications for operating the plant; assuring appropriate qualification of a sufficient number of reactor operators, and the reliability of the emergency diesel generators.

Full power operation requires the approval of the Commission itself which was granted on July 31 following a favorable recommendation by the NRC Staff.
