Dear Mr. Farrar:

SUBJECT:

ZION NUCLEAR POWER STATION, UNITS 1 AND 2 - GENERIC LETTER 83-28, ITEM 1.2 (POST-TRIP REVIEW - DATE AND INFORMATION CAPABILITY)

By letter dated November 5,1985, the Commonwealth Edison Company (CECO) responded to Generic Letter 83-28 with regard to required actions based on generic implications of Salem ATWS events. We have reviewed your submittal relative to Item 1.2 and conclude that post-trip review date and information capabilities of Zion Units 1 and 2 do not meet the staff guidelines. The issues were discussed between CECO staff members G. Alexander, P. Kaptur, and C. Schultz and NRC staff members J. Norris and R. Froelich in a telephone conversation on August 29, 1985.

The enclosed Safety Evaluation contains recommendations for additional parameters that should be recorded at Zion Station. Please notify us promptly how CECO proposes to resolve this discrepancy.

Sincerely,

/s/SVarga Steven A. Varga, Chief Operating Reactors Branch No.1 Division of Licensing
