, T OCT 2 41985 Mr. William Cavanaugh, III President and Chief Operating Officer Mississippi Power & Light Company P.O. Box 1640 Jackson, Mississippi 39205

Dear Mr. Cavanaugh:

Thank you for the timely information in thhssiuipp4 Dawar & Liaht M Company's September 20, 1985, letter to the NRC regarding the Mississippi Public Service Comission's September 18, 1985, Order Directing Suspension of Construction of Grand Gulf Unit No. 2. We recognize, as stated in your letter, that only limited construction activities have'been performed on Grand Gulf Unit No. 2 in the last few years because of MP&L's limited financial resources. Your letter indicates that steps will be taken to suspend these limited construction activities and that you will make a l

decision regarding completion of construction within the next few months.

By letter dated August 22, 1985, the NRC staff requested additional informa-tion regarding MP&L's August 15, 1984, request for extension of the latest construction completion date in the construction permit for Grand Gulf Unit No. 2. You are requested to defer a response to staff's request until MP&L's decision regarding completion of construction is made. Should MP&L decide to suspend construction for a long period of time, with the option to 7

reactivate construction in the future, you should address your plans for a quality assurance program for safety-related equipment and environmental protection during the period of suspended construction.

! Sincerely, Original signed bgi
