The purpose of this letter is to verify our recent conversations and to amend the U. S. and Arizona Licenses for several radioactive sources as outlined below.
A.
U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Materials License: SNM-1665 It is our desire to be able to have two test instru-ments located at the Peabody Coal Company Cor-J porate Headquarters in St. Louis. These test in-struments contain two sources each or a total of four sources. These test instruments will be us-ed for occasional demonstration purposes and then stored. The instruments are:

Arizona Atomic' Energy Commission License Peabody now operates one'Sortex Ash Analyzer at its Black Mesa Mine and intends within the next year to install two additional Sortex Phase III A-2 Ash Analyzers at the Black Mesa mining complex consisting of two mines, the Kayenta Mine and the Black Mesa Mine both located about 35 miles southwest of the city of Kayenta, Arizona. Peabody desires to be licensed to have:

Searle Model PPCI sources not to exceed 10 millic.uries each. Six sources will be used in the Sortex analyzers and two will be used for demonstration or stored.

To be used in a Sortex Company of North' America Model Phase III A and Model Phase III A-2 Coal Ash Analyzer to analyze ash content of coal. Sources will be used to demonstrate analyzer on an infrequent basis and primarily will be stored. The head unit a sketch of

The third cide contains a graphite reference block and the fourth side is open to direct the sources onto the sample of '
c oal. Our intended use unit for demonstration purposes is to elevate the head unit about three inches over a metal table. Then to insert test trays of coal under the sources. At all other times the source holder will be rotated to face the safe steel side.
During storage the two sources will be placed in a one inch by two inch cylindrical lead storage holder and placed in a vault.
Radiation warning labels will be positioned at appropriate places.
The Texas Nuclear portable ana-lyzer containing the two source identified in 6. B. shall be used as designed by the manufacture for demonstration purposes.
The instrument head provides adequate shielding for the radio-active source.

The licenced material shall be used only at the licensee's corporate headquarters located at St. Louis, Missouri.

Licensed material shall be used by or under the su-pervision of Pete Bacchetti, Jack Ellis, James Addington or William Emke. Messers Bacchetti

and Ellis have instructed Messers Addington and Emke in the proper use of the sources. We intend to have the instruction and maintenance manual present and follow the instructions for both test instruments at anytime the instruments are demon-strated or maintained.
