Subject:
Clinton Power Station Moderate Energy Line Break Safe Shutdown Analysis
Dear Dr. Butler:
During a discussion with a member of the NRC Staff, clarification was requested on the method used to assure that Clinton Power Station-(CPS) could be safely shut down after a postulated moderate energy line break (MELB) in areas outside containment where a high energy line break (HELB) is not postulated.
The existing analyses have been reviewed and show that the plant can be safely shut down in the event of a postulated MELB.
In performing these analyses, instrumentation which was assumed to be sprayed from a postulated MELB was conservatively assumed not to
-function. Safe shutdown is achieved through the use of separated redundant equipment or the use of equipment which is qualified for spray from a postulated MELB.
If you need any further information, please contact me.
Sincerel yours, I
r F. A.
