Dear Mr. Denton:

j In the Matter of the

)

Docket Mos. 50-327

)

Tennessee Valley Authority

)

50-328 As discussed with members of your staff in a telephone conference call on-j October 2, 1985, the following status of TVA's environmental qualification (EQ) program review is being provided.

3 4 -

Based upon our current rate of progress, approximately 45 of 56 of Sequoyah l

Nuclear plant's (SQN) EQ documentation packages will be complete by i

November 4, 1985.

Eighteen of the 42 cable packages will also be complete.

All documentation review. includle-tsat for cables, is now expected to be complete by the end of November 1945.

As discussed in the telephone conversation on October 2, we have identified a number of outstanding technical issues related to EQ.- Some of these issues

.will not be fully dispositioned before November 4,1985.-

These open issues are identified in the enclosure along with their current schedule for completion and potential impact to EQ package development. There issues and other. issues affecting the full EQ documentation status of EQ pa,ckages will be resolved before restart of the SQN units.

1 In the September 27, 1985 letter from H. G. parris to you, we requested an

{

j-extension to the schedule,for final environmental qualification of' electrical I

~ cables in accordance with the. requirements of 10 CFR 50.49.

The extension for operation beyond November 30, 1985 is being requested for both units until April 1, 1986. - This date is based upon-a worst-case ~ situation. If we identify additional cable inside contairunent that should have been included in our. current test program, but-was not, it would then require until April 1, 1986, to complete the newly identified test requirements.

If this proves to be the case, we would, of course, revise'our.tustification for continued Operation to include this' newly'identifled,cabid our cable f1 eld verification efforts are scheduled te % complete by October 16, 1985.

In summary, our SQW EQ program nill'have progressed to the point that you will be able to fully: assess our efforts toward full compliance with'the..

requirements of 10 CFR 50.49 b3' November 4,1985. Accordingly, we request you plan a review of the SQN EQ program during the week beginning November 4, 1985.
