EXEriPTION REQUESTS FROM 10 CFR 50.48, FIRE PROTECTION Re: Haddam Neck Plant By letter dated September 16, 1985, Connecticut Yankee Atomic Power Company (CYAPC0) requested additional exemptions from the fire protection requit ements of 10 CFR 50.48. The staff has performed an initial review of your submittal concerning the subject exemptions. Based on our review, we find that the additional information requested in the enclosure will be needed to complete our rcview in a timely manner. Therefore, you are requested to provide this inrormation within 45 days of receipt of this letter in order to maintain our present review schedule.

The reporting and/or recordkeeping requirements, contained in this letter affect fewer than ten respondents; therefore, OMB clearance is not required under P.L.96-511.

2 REQUEST FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION REGARDING 1

EXEMPTIONS FROM SOME FIRE PROTECTION REQUIREMENTS OF 10 CFR 50.48 FOR THE HADDAM NECK PLANT DOCKET NO. 50-213 1.0 Section 2.2 of your submittal states that modifications have been proposed to reroute and/or protect the cables associated with safe shutdown equipment in Fire Zone A-ID so that a fire in Fire Zone A-1A will not affect the operation of these components. Provide details of the proposed reroute and/or protection referred to above.

2.0 Sections 3.1, 4.1, 6.1, 7.1 and 8.1 of your submittal request exemptions from the requirements of Section III.G.2.a of Appendix R for several non-rated or unlabeled doors and frames in addition to several unprotected duct penetrations in fire area boundaries.

To facilitate the evaluation of these requests, provide the following for each opening (door and penetration),

a. Describe the location and configuration of redundant or alternate safe shutdown equipment / circuits in relation to these openings.
b. Verify that automatic suppression and detection systems, for which credit is taken, are addressed in plant Technical Specifications.
c. Describe what modifications are required for each opening to meet the requirements of Section III.G.2.a.
d. Provide additional information to support the basis that each opening provides a level of fire protection safety equivalent to that required by Section III.G.2.
