Dear Mr. Denton:

The purpose of this letter is to submit the enclosed ~ report of the Catawba

'2A diesel engine Component Revalidation Inspections. .The inspections were performed in accordance with the instpection plans we submitted to you on April 30, 1985 with several additions to incorporate comments received from the NRC and NRC consultants.

Extensive disassembly and inspection of the 2A diesel engine has been com-pleted. Since~ this is a new engine and has not been run onsite, the purpose of this inspection was to confirm the satisfactory condition of various engine parts and to ensure the proper assembly of the engine by the use of controlled assembly procedures. The only significant condition found as a

-result'of the inspecticn was that five heads were plug welded using partial penetration welds. Since extensive testing of the Unit i diesel generators revealed a problem with the partial penetration weld repairs. the five heads on engine 2A were replaced as were the defective heada on the Unit 1

. diesel engines.

Inspection of th7 2B diesel engine is now in progress. Based on the results of the 1A, 1B and 2A diesel engine inspections, Duke Power Company considers all expected conditions of engine 2B fully addressed. Therefore, unless conditions not addressed in the previous reports are found during the 2B engine inspection, Duke will not submit the inspection report for the 2B engine.

However, this report will be available onsite.

'Ihe Unit .2 diesel generators will be declared operable, in accordance with the Technical Specifications for Catawba Unit 2, prior to fuel loading.

Based on this, as well as the results of the extensive inspections and test-ing of the diesel generators at Catawba Duke has concluded that the diesel generators at Catawba will provide a reliable source of backup power.

'Very truly yours, Hal B.-Tucker g[
