INJECTION AP PENALTY FOR ECCS EVALUATION MODEL Re:

Yankee Nuclear Power Station (Yankee)

In a letter dated August 16, 1985, Yankee Atomic Electric Company proposed a modification to their ECCS evaluation model used for. Yankee.

The model modification proposes to reduce the injection AP penalty, which accounts for the thermal-hydraulic interaction between steam and the emergency core cooling water, from 0.8 psid to 0.15 psid during the pumped ECCS injection phase.

Enclosed is our safety evaluation on this model modification.

Based upon the EPRI ECC mixing data and independent staff calculations, we have concluded that the proposed modific.ation complies with Section I.D.4 of 1

Appendix K to 10 CFR 50.

Thus, we find this model modification acceptable as part of the approved Yankee Atomic ECCS evaluation model for Yankee.
