i There are several advantages to presenting the total activity with a listing of all radionuclides.

First, all the DOT shipping paper information 1: in front of any additional information.

If only the 540 forms need to accompany the shipment, the total number of pages would be significantly reduced from i

current practice.

In this example, the number of pages would be three as opposed to 10 for the actual shipment. This formatting change should make review of a manifest for any emergency response purpose quicker.

Second, duplication in the whole uniform manifest package is reduced significantly with no loss of information. Third, by keeping DOT and NRC information needs on separate forms, only the NRC Form 540 (DOT portion) would have to accompany the shipment while the rest of the manifest could be transmitted electronically or by some other suitable means.

I would also point out that substantial paperwork reduction would occur for shipments from waste processors to disposal facilities.
