SUMMARY

OF OPERATING EXPERIENCE Docket No.

50-266 Unit Name Point Beach Unit 1 Date November 6, 1985 Completed By C. W.

Krause Telephone 414/277-2001 Unit 1 operated at approximately 497 MWe net throughout the period with no significant. load reductions.

On October 2, 1985, a containment inspection team opened the outer door of the personnel hatch air lock.

When the outer door was opened, the inner door became unlatched and containment integrity was lost for a few seconds.

The problem was identified as an interlock. failure between the outer and inner air lock doors and was subsequently repaired.

The NRC was notified of this event via the red phone and LER 85-008 was issued.

On October 9, 1985, during a test of the nuclear instrument-ation (NI) power range, a 2% turbine runback was caused when a technician incorrectly operated the runback bypass switch.

LER-009 was issued for this event.

Safety-related maintenance included repair of a leaking service water pump, repair of the motor on the 4D diesel generator lube oil sump circulating pump, and replacement of the glycol cooler on the 4D diesel generator.

SUMMARY

OF OPERATING EXPERIENCE Docket No.

50-301 Unit Name Point Beach Unit 2 Date November 6, 1985 Completed By C. W.

Krause Telephone 414/277-2001 Unit 2 operated at approximately 494 MWe net until October 4, 1985 when refueling ramp-down commenced at 1900 hours0.022 days
0.528 hours
0.00314 weeks
7.2295e-4 months
.

The generator was taken off line at 0211 hours0.00244 days
0.0586 hours
3.488757e-4 weeks
8.02855e-5 months
on October 5,

1985, and at 0630 hours0.00729 days
0.175 hours
0.00104 weeks
2.39715e-4 months
, the reactor was subcritical.

The unit operated during all of the 319 days since the previous refueling, with the generator being taken off line only once for about six hours.

The unit operated for the last 298 consecutive days without any significant power reductions.

On October 28, 1985, during a fuel inspection, assemblics L56 and L59 were discovered to have some damaged fuel cladding due to baffle jetting.

A visual inspection of the suspect baffles is planned.

If evidence of baffle joint gaps is found, an attempt will be made to gauge them.

A licensee event report will be issued regarding this event.

Maintenance activities conducted during this period included eddy current testing of the steam generator tubes, plugging of 10 tubes in the "A" and 44 tubes in the "B"

steam generator, and ultrasonic testing of the control rod guide tube split pins.

Work is currently under way to replace four split pins with crack indications.

Several minor repairs were made to valves on miscellaneous safety-related systems.
