Re: Brunswick Steam Electric Plant, Units 1 and 2 By letter dated April 24, 1984, as supplemented on December 21, 1984, you i submitted an alternate shutdown capability report. Our review of that report is nearing completion. On August 6 and 7, 1985, the NRC staff conducted conference calls with your staff regarding the certain areas of the report. Your staff provided clarifications of that report and additional information to suppler'ent our review which should be reflected in a supplement to that report. On August 27, 1985 a meeting was held at the site to further help resolve the questions regarding the staff requirements and to lock at the areas in question. The specific information required is identified in the enclosure to this letter.

We request that you respond to this Request for Additional Information within 45 days from the date of the letter.

The reporting and/or recordkeeping requirements of this letter affect fewer than ten respondents; therefore, OMB clearance is.not required under P.L.96-511.

REQUEST FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION APPENDIX R BRUNSWICK STEAM ELECTRIC PLANT, UNITS 1 AND 2 The areas of concern and the specific information requests for each are as follows:

1. Separation of redundant functions, the sprinkler system, fire barriers and plume impingement shields in fire area DG-1.

a) Provide photographs of the area.

b) Provide drawings of the sprinkler system showing sprinkler head locations and heat collectors.

c) Provide a characterization of the separation of functions in fire area DG-1.

d) Provide additional information concerning the feasibility study for providing necessary modifications (reference p. 7-14 of the ASCA Report Volume I).

e) Provide dimensional sketches showing the location of the plume impingement shield and Kaowool wrap.

f) Provide dimensional sketches showing the arrangement of the rotofoam and your evaluation which justifies its use in a fire barrier.

2. Provide a sketch showing the arrangement of the water curtains in the reactor building.
