1. INTRODUCTION --

An ampacity derating test was carried out on a cable tray fire protection envelope consisting of 4 layers of Darmatt KM1 three hour replacement material. The outer layer was covered by an inconel reinforced silicone cloth.

The baseline for the raceway with its associated 100% cable loading was also tested.

The tests were carried out in accordance with the procedures stated in Faverdale Technology Centre test specification Document No. TDS/ AMP 001 Issue D and the I EEE P848/D16 January 1995 Standard.

The aim of the test was to record the current required to keep the conductor temperature at a steady state of 90*C whilst in a controlled room environment of 40'C f. 2*C and thus obtained an ampacity derating factor for the fire protection envelope.

The insulation itself comprises of an inorganic endothermic material, an organic fibre and an organic binder which were processed to form a sheet of uniform thickness.

From these sheets, fabricated panels were then cut to size and manufactured.

The KM1 system consisted of 4 layers of KM1 board for the 3 hour3.472222e-5 days <br />8.333333e-4 hours <br />4.960317e-6 weeks <br />1.1415e-6 months <br /> system, with the outer layer of panels being covered with an inconel reinforced silicone cloth. Each layer consisted of four panels (sixteen in total) per side of the cable tray. Expanding paper gasket was used at all joints. The panels were secured together using inconel i tying wire. l l

The thickness range for each layer used on the cable tray is detailed below: l Layer 1 (inside layer),14 - 20.imm (all sides)

Layer 214 - 18.8mm (all sides)

Layer 315 - 18.6mm (all sides)

Layer 4 (outside layer) 15 - 18.8mm (all sides)

The general arrangement of the sample and the location of the KM1 panels can be seen in the sketches in Appendix A. Further sample dimensions are shown in Appendix G.

3. DESCRIPTION OF THE CONTROLLED ENVIRONMENT ROOM AND TEST EQUIPMENT ,

b 3.1 General The ampacity test was conducted in a draft free controlled temperature enclosure of a size sufficient to accommodate the test sample with a minimum clearance of 610mm between the test sample and all sides of the enclosure.

3.2 Test Enclosure Temocrature The temperature within the test enclosure was the average temperature l obtained from the reading of six thermocouples symmetrically disposed and }

distributed to measure the temperature at locations 305mm directly above and directly below the test sample. '

f One of the thermocouples was used to monitor the temperature and then fed l back to a temperature controller, which controlled heaters to ensure that an j ambient temperature within the test enclosure of 40*C i 2'C was achieved. j l

3.3 Raceway l l

The raceway used for the ampacity tests was 3.65m long: 600mm x 101mm galvanised mild steel ladder rack tray.

3.4 Raceway Suocorts i

The raceway was supported on an Unistrut framework providing support {

points at a distance of 850mm from each end of the raceway.

3.5 Cables The cables were unarmoured 4 core,16mm 600/1000V rated,10mm (str) j PCW XLPE insulated cores, laid up PETP tape with an outer sheath of  :

extruded CSP giving an outside diameter of nominally 19mm. 124 cables I were installed inside the cable tray.

3.6 Power Supolv i

The power source used was a 240V,45A Regavoit Variable transformer ]

(Type 715-G3PE) supplied by Claude Lyons Controls Ltd.  !

4. INSTRUMENTATION

j 4.1.1 Electrical Conductors i

The thermocouples used were type T glass covered to BS 4937 part 5 and BS 1828. These have an accuracy of10.5*C in the appropriate l- temperature range. The temperatures of the individual electrical conductors were obtained from the readings of copper / copper-nickel thermocouples fabricated by fusion welding the twisted ends of the thermocouple wires.

4.1.2 Test Enclosure Six thermocouples, type K glass covered to BS 4937 Part 4 and BS 1827 and with an accuracy ofi 0.5'C were symmetrically disposed and distributed at locations 305mm directly above and below the test samples.

4.2 Data Recorder The data recorder used was an Scorpio Solartron SI3535 (0112 FAV) data logging system supplied by Schlumberger. This is a multi tasking device with an accuracy of 0.05%.

4.3 Current Measurement The current flowing through the electrical conductors was measured and relayed back to the Scorpio data logger using a Beckman Industrial 600 A ,

AC/DC current clamp (0046 FAV) supplied by RS Components Limited.  !

S. TEST PROCEDURE Installation of the Raceways OS-1064-00014 ..

00 I 5.1 .

The raceway was placed horizontally across the Unistrut supports 610mm plus from the walls of the enclosure.

Pieces of wood were placed between the unistrut supports and the raceways to act as a thermal break.

5.2 Installation of Electrical conductor Thermocouoles The thermocouples were installed by sitting the insulation of the electrical conductor and placing the thermocouple junction in intimate contact with the  !

electrical conductor. Following the installation of the thermocouple the slit i in the insulation was sealed using electrical tape, so as to restore the electric conductor construction, as practically as possible, to its original state. To q prevent the thermocouples junction from being dislodged, the thermocouple )

leads were additionally fixed with electrical tape to the outside of the electrical j conductor construction.

The thermocouples were attached to certain cables in the locations and  ;

positions shown in Appendix A.

The c .ble tray was filled with 124 cables and achieved 100% visual fill.

The conductors in each cable vere connected in series and all the cables were connected in series, finally forming one single series electrical circuit. j l

To eliminate cold ends the lengths of the cables protruding from the raceways l were wrapped with 2 inch thick ceramic fibre blanket.  ;

i 5.3 Connection to the Power Source The two ends of the cables were connected to the power source and energised l with a voltage so as to reach a maximum steady-state temperature of 90*C i l 1*C, at thermocouple location 2 (highest individual thermocouple reading was used). l l

5.4 Test Readines The steady-state temperatures of the test enclosure were recorded concurrently l with the steady-state temperatures of the electrical conductors and a l I

measurement of the current flowing through the conductors.

6.1 The tests were conducted on 4 August 1996 and 6 December 1996.

6.2 The Darmatt KM1 material had the following moisture contents (pieces taken at random from the sheets provided).
