INTRODUCTION Ampacity Derating tests were carried out on 1" diameter and 4" diameter conduit fire protection envelopes consisting of a single layer of Darmatt KM1 one hour replacement material. The KM1 Darmatt was covered with a grey inconel reinforced silicone clcth 3

The baseline for the conduits with its associated 100% cable loading was also tested.

2 An average surface Emissivity measurement was taken for both conduits.

The tests were carried out in accordance with the procedures stated in December l

Engineering Document No. TDS/ AMP 002 Issue B and the P848/D16 January 1995 l

IEEE Standard.

i The aims of the tests were to record the current required to keep the conductor f

temperature at a steady state of 90*C whilst in a controlled room environment of 40*C 12'C and thus obtained an ampacity derating factor for both fire protection systems.

SAMPLE DETAILS 4

The insulation' itself comprises of an inorganic endothermic material, an organic fibre and an organic binder which were processed to form a sheet and sectional insulation pieces.

The individual conduits were covered with premoulded Darmatt KM1 pieces (one j

layer of multiple sections consisting of two semicircular pieces each wrapped around the conduit) which were held in. position using inconel tying wire. Expanding paper gasket was installed between where all semicircular pieces butted up to one another i

and where one conduit section butted up to another.

The exterior of the envelope was covered with inconel reinforced silicone cloth which i

was stapled onto the conduit and then clamped using inconel tying wire. The cloth was wrapped with a 2" overlap along the entire length of the conduits.

The positioning of the tying wires were in accordance with the Darchem Engineering KM1 Darmatt Installation Manual (DEL Document No. KM1-IM-1 Issue C).

The insulation on both conduits was split into 4 sections, each section consisting of i

two semicircular pieces wrapped around the conduit. The thickness range for both l

conduits was as follows:

1" diameter conduit 38.lmm - 41.9mm 4" diameter conduit 28.8mm - 30.5mm l

The general arrangement and the location of the KM1 conduit sections can be seen in Appendix A. Further sample dimensions are shown in Appendix H.

DESCRIPTION OF THE CONTROLLED ENVIRONMENT ROOM AND TEST EQUIPMENT 3.1 General The ampacity test was conducted in a draft free controlled temperature enclosure of a size sufficient to accommodate the test sample with a minimum clearance of 610mm between the test sample and all sides of the enclosure.

3.2 Test Enclosure Temocrature The temperature within the test enclosure was the average temperature obtained from the reading of six thermocouples symmetrically disposed and distributed to measure the temperature and locations 305mm directly above and directly below the test sample.

3.3 Raceways The raceways used for the ampacity tests were:

a) 3.65m long : 1" nominal bore conduit b) 3.65m long : 4" nominal bore conduit l

3.4 Raceway Suoports The raceway was supported on an Unistrut framework providing support points at a distance of 850mm from each end of the conduits.

3.5 Cables a) 4" NB Conduit i

The cables were unarmoured 4 core,16 mm 600/1000 V rated 10mm (str) PCW XLPE insulated cores, laid up PETP tape with an outer

sheath of extruded CSP giving an outside diameter of nominally 19mm. Twelve cables were installed inside the. conduit.

of extruded CSP, giving an outside diameter of nominally 19mm. One j

INSTRUMENTATION 4.1 Thermocouples

}

4.1.1 Electrical Conductors I

l The thermocouples used were type T glass covered to BS 4937 part 5 l

and BS 1828. These have an accuracy ofi 0.5'C in the appropriate j

temperature range. The temperatures of the individual electrical l

conductors were obtained from the readings of copper / copper-nickel thermxouples fabricated by fusion welding the twisted ends of the thermocuupie wires.

i 4.1.2 Test Enclosure Six thermocouples, Type K glass covered to BS 4937 Part 4 and BS i

1827 with an accuracy ofi 0.5'C were symmetrically disposed and distributed at locations 305mm directly above and below the test j

samples.

4.2 Data Recorder l

The data recorder used was a Scorpio Solartron SI 3535 (0112 FAV) data logging system supplied by Schlumberger. This is a multi-tasking device with j

an accuracy of 0.05%.

4.3 Current Measurement The current flowing through the electrical conductors was measured and relayed back to the Scorpio data logger using a Beckman Industrial 600 AC/DC current clamp (0046 FAV) supplied by R S C,omponents Limited.

l 4.4 Emissivity Measurement i

The emissivity of the conduits were measured using an Agema Infrared Systems, Thermopoint 80, thermal imaging camera.

The conduits were placed in turn across the unistrut supports 610mm l_

minimum from the walls of the enclosure. Pieces of wood were placed between the unistrut supports and the raceways to act as a thermal break.

5.2 The thermocouples were installed by slitting the insulation of the electrical conductor and placing the thermocouple junction in intimate contact with the electrical conductor. Following the installation of the thermocouple the slit in the insulation was sealed using electrical tape, so as to restore the electrical conductor construction, as practically as possible, to its original state. To prevent the thermocouple junction from being dislodged, the thermocouple leads were additional fixed with electrical tape to the outside of the electrical j

conductor construction.

The con'du' lts were filled with the number of cables to create the required level of cable loading. The number of cables used is given in the following table.

l The conductors in each cable were connected in series and all the cables were l

connected in series, finally forming one single series electrical circuit.

To eliminate cold ends the lengths of the cables protruding from the conduit l

was wrapped with 1" thick ceramic fibre blanket.

5.3 Connection to the Power Suppiv I

The two ends of the cable bundles were connected to a single phase A/C power source and energised with a voltage so as to reach 2a maximum steady state temperature of 90*C d.1*C, at thermocouple loc ~ation 2 (highest individual thermocouple reading was used),

5.4 Conduit Emissivity Measurement i

The average surface emissivity of both conduits was documented. The average surface emissivity of the conduit was determined at a minimum of 9 points. Each test point was at a distance of 305mm from any other test point Faverdale Technology Centre

The method used for obtaining an emissivity reading was taken from the Thermopoint 80 operating manual. Firstly several pieces of masking tape were positioned on the conduit at the distances mentioned previously. With the emissivity set to 0.92 the temperature of the masking tape was noted (its emissivity is approximately 0.92).

This process establishes the actual temperature of the object. With the ' Scale Select' set to *C the surface temperature of the sample was measured. Adjustments to the emissivity were made until the display indicated the samples actual temperature, which was previously measured.

The emissivity value required to achieve this temperature was noted. This method was repeated several times along the conduit and an average value obtained.

This procedure was used for both conduits.

5.5 Test Readings The tests were carried out in the order of the 1" diameter conduit first and then the 4" diameter conduit. A baseline test and a one hour replacement material test was carried out on both conduits.

The steady-state temperatures of the test enclosure were recorded concurrently with the steady-state temperatures of the electrical conductors and a measurement of the current flowing through the conductors.

When the cable circuit has been in a steady-state condition for a period of 3 hours3.472222e-5 days <br />8.333333e-4 hours <br />4.960317e-6 weeks <br />1.1415e-6 months <br /> since any adjustment of current, enclosure temperature or other system change, and the steady-state temperature of the hottest thermocouple reading at location 2 was 90 i 1*C and the average values for the thermocouples at location 1 and 3 were within i 4*C of the average value of location 2, the test was deemed to have ended.

H9k To statistically assure an equilibrium, the conductor temperatures were averaged at 1 minute intervals and a linear regression analysis (least square fit) performed on the data from the preceding 60 minute period. After the initial 60 minute period the most recent average conductor temperature was added and the chronological oldest average conductor temperature discarded.

The slope of the line from the linear regression was in *C/ hour. As soon as the magnitude of the slope became less than 0.2, equilibrium had been reached.

The various models may be used for temperature measurement in general maintenance, product and process temperature monitoring, statistical quality control, and research. Each model ( except LT and AG units) includes a telescopic sight that increases alming precision for small targets. Thermopoint 80 models available: Low Temperature Basic model; uses open-style sights. Low Temperature Scope Allows general purp'ose measurement of smaller targets than TFT80, at medium distances. High Resolution High resolution model for general-purpose measurement of smaller targets at greater distances than TPT80 Scope. Close Focus 1 Special purpose high resolution models offering Close Focus 2 the capability to measure 6.4mm (.25") and 12.7mm (.50") targets at 0.6m (24") and 1.2m (48"), respectively. l Long Range High resolution model focused at infinity for long-range measurement applications, and general purpose. l High Temperature High tem serature model for measuring metals, 1 cement, glass, ceramics, heat treating, etc. Class Designed specifically to measure glass surfaces. Agricultural Measures temperature with 0.1 degree resolution for agricultural and laboratory applications. Sub-Zero Measures temperatures from minus 80*C (110*F) to 120'C (250'F) for food processing, agricultural, and other applications.
