NRC INTEGRATED INSPECTION REPORT 50-413/96-16 AND 50-414/96-16
Dear Mr. McCollum:
l
On October 19. 1996, the NRC completed an inspection at your Catawba Nuclear
Station. The enclosed report presents the results of that inspection.
Facility operations during the period were characterized by conservative
-actions to resolve equipment issues that were encountered during the startup
l
of Unit 1 following its Steam Generator Replacement Outage.
l
Two items discussed in this report involve untimely actions to address-
!
operational issues that originated in the chemistry organization.
In the
i
-first case, communication between operations and chemistry did not result in
actions to reduce the boron concentration in the Unit 1 Fueling Water Storage
i
Tank before a Technical Specification action was required.
In the second
'
l
case, actions were not implemented to remove an identified clog in the floor
drain system before backup of the system caused contamination of portions of
the auxiliary building.
In accordance with 10 CFR 2.790 of the NRC's " Rules of Practice." a copy of
this letter and its enclosure will be placed in the NRC Public Document Room
