Gentlemen:
This refers to the routine safety inspection conducted by Messrs. J. E. Hard
and M. M. Moser of this office on June 9 through August 10, 1985, of activi-
ties at the Prairie Island Nuclear Generating Plant, Units 1 and 2, authorized
by NRC Operating Licenses No. DPR-42 and No. OPR-60 and to the discussion of
our findings with Mr. Watz1 and other members of your staff at the conclusion
of the inspection.
The enclosed copy of our inspection report identifies areas examined during
the inspection. Within these areas, the inspection consisted of a selective
examination of procedures and representative records, observations, and
interviews with personnel.
During this inspection, certain of your activities appeared to be in violation
with NRC requirements, as described in the enclosed Appendix. A written
response is required.
In addition to the violation mentioned above, our inspection report identifies
and discusses items of safety concern to our inspectors. We request that you
respond in writing within thirty days of the date of this report regarding
actions which have been taken and which are planned regarding these safety
items.
In accordance with Section 2.790 of the NRC's " Rules of Practice," Part 2,
Title 10, Code of Federal Regulations, a copy of this letter and the enclosure
will be placed in the NRC's Public Document Room.
