SUBJECT: NRC INTEGRATED INSPECTION REPORT 50-413/96-15 AND 50-414/96-15
Dear Mr. McCollum:
On October 12. 1996, the NRC completed its inspection effort associated with
the Unit 1 steam generator replacement at your Catawba Nuclear Station. The
enclosed report presents the results of that inspection.

In general, management and execution of the steam generator replaccment ,
activities were good Preparation and planning for the outage was evident in i
several areas where good results were achieved. These areas included facility
preparations, removal and storage of old steam generators, fit-up of new steam
generators.'and startup testing. In addition, overall radiation protection
performance during the outage was very good because of an effective crud burst ,
! and ALARA (As Low As Reasonably Achievable) exposure planning. Manual I
secondary system welding proved to be an area of significant challenge. as i
evidenced by the number of problems encountered due, in part, to insufficient i
preparation and training. l

In accordance with 10 CFR 2.790 of the NRC's " Rules of Practice," a copy of l
this letter and its enclosures will be placed in the NRC Public Document Room
