SUBJECT:
NRC INTEGRATED INSPECTION REPORT 50-413/96-15 AND 50-414/96-15
Dear Mr. McCollum:
On October 12. 1996, the NRC completed its inspection effort associated with
the Unit 1 steam generator replacement at your Catawba Nuclear Station. The
enclosed report presents the results of that inspection.
In general, management and execution of the steam generator replaccment
~
,
i
activities were good
Preparation and planning for the outage was evident in
several areas where good results were achieved. These areas included facility
preparations, removal and storage of old steam generators, fit-up of new steam
generators.'and startup testing.
In addition, overall radiation protection
performance during the outage was very good because of an effective crud burst
,
and ALARA (As Low As Reasonably Achievable) exposure planning.

secondary system welding proved to be an area of significant challenge. as
i
evidenced by the number of problems encountered due, in part, to insufficient
i
preparation and training.
In accordance with 10 CFR 2.790 of the NRC's " Rules of Practice," a copy of
this letter and its enclosures will be placed in the NRC Public Document Room
(PDR).
