p censo SNM-33 SUPJECT: Shipping Containors - Specini Nuclear Mater Deer Mr. Jchnsen:

During the past soveral months we havo been actively engaCed in a development pro-gram to design a series of new packagos for transportation of spe m terials.

ington during May 1958 botneen the Atomic Energy Cocaission, the I.C.C., and the Bunau of Explosivos representatives concerning the subjset of ICL and LTL shipment At this recting the Bureau of Explosives and the I.C.C. pointed out of birdcages.

their reasons for desiring an outer abirdcage" with a solid wall befon issuing un-limited transportation permission.

Based on those discussions, our develop:nent effort has been directed towards Two such containers have been designing a " drum in drun" type shipping contairar.

assemb3md and tasted for nochanical stability using the standard I.C.C. four ft.

The enclosed drawings, Nos. 3369-2 and odge drop onto concreta as the criterion.

3369-3 show the inner support mechanism and the assembled shipping container as tested.

This 1stter is a request for permission for use of these containers in the follow-ing service:

5 gallon drum in a "55 shorty" For shipments of " limited safe" batches between the assay of 3%

The =v4== number that oe'n be placed side by sidn'.in a standard 3,

We are requesting parmission to utilizo pachngos shoan in Drawings 3369-2 and 3369=3 for the shiprent of uranium as described above in unlinitod service; i.e,

We are also requesting permission for rouse of these u,. : tainers.

We are, by copy of this letter, submitting the design of this packitge to the Bureau of Explosives and are going to offer them sample packages for extensive mechanical testing to determino the integrity of the shipping containers for such unlimited transportation usage.

Very truly yours, MAL EKRODT AL WORKS 74 ask.
