MALLINCKRODT CHEMICAL WORKS We have reviewed the Mallinckrodt application dated February 9, 1959, requesting approval of a shipping procedure for fuel pins for Allis-Chalmers.
Mallinckrodt proposes to ship several thousand fuel pins in lots of 170 pins per container. There will be 688 g U-235 (as 1.8%
enriched oxide) in a seven gallon water-tight inner drum, which is braced inside a 55 gallon outer drum.
Based upon our review of the application we recommend approval of the proposal put forth by Mallinckrodt. We see no reason why the containers cannot be stacked in cubical array, comprising a carload shipment of 47.16 kg U-235.
